30% off + 15% off is not 45% off. Each discount applies to the already-reduced price.

About this calculator

A percentage discount reduces the original price by that fraction of its value. When successive discounts are applied — for example, 20% off followed by an additional 10% off — the result is not equivalent to a single 30% discount. Each discount applies to the already-reduced price, so the combined effect is slightly less: 20% + 10% successive discounts yield a 28% total reduction.

It's also worth distinguishing markup from markdown. Markup is calculated as a percentage of the cost price (how much profit a retailer adds). Markdown (discount) is calculated as a percentage of the selling price. This distinction matters when comparing pricing strategies or verifying advertised savings.
