About this tool
Habits form through a loop of cue, routine, and reward. Research by Phillippa Lally at University College London found that it takes an average of 66 days for a new behaviour to become automatic — the commonly cited "21 days" figure is not supported by evidence. This tracker helps you maintain consistency across that formation period.
A visual chain of consecutive completed days creates a "don't break the chain" motivator. Missing a single day rarely derails a habit; missing two consecutive days is when habits are most likely to collapse. The goal of the tracker is to make your streak visible so that breaking it has a clear psychological cost.
