Words are counted as sequences of characters separated by whitespace. The character count includes all letters, numbers, spaces, and punctuation. Sentences are identified by terminal punctuation marks (full stops, exclamation marks, and question marks). Paragraphs are counted by double line breaks or blank lines between blocks of text.
Reading time is estimated at 200–250 words per minute, which is the typical range for adult silent reading of general prose. Skimming familiar material is considerably faster; dense technical or academic writing tends to be slower. The estimate is a useful planning guide for content creators and editors.
